How does Command WorkStation aid Job Flow?
20/04/2005
Command WorkStation is a Job Management application that is used by Administrators to manage and control the Job Flow.
Administrators use it because it allows:
- Better control and management of job flow.
- Ease of checking printer resources and activities.
- Ease of checking status of print jobs.
To understand the benefits fully it is helpful to think of the 3 step printing process: a job is spooled, it is processed and then printed. Take this concept and think of the scenario of an operator in a high volume printing environment who has control of the entire job flow and we can see how Command WorkStation benefits the organisation.

Explanation of Workflow
Within a high volume printing environment many jobs can be sent at the same time and these are spooled and held within the printer. These jobs can be viewed inside Command WorkStation. Once held the administrator has control of what will happen to the job, it can be:
- Printed
- Processed and held
- Printed and held
If they decide the job should be printed it will go through the
normal processing stage and then be printed.
If they decide to Process the job and Hold the job, it will be
RIPped and this processed job will be held, the administrator will
then have to decide what happens to the job (print, delete...
etc).
The last option is to Print and hold the job, here a RIPped copy of the job will be stored within Command WorkStation but the document will also be printed. This allows the administrators to control the flow of print jobs and effectively decide what will be printed.
