Using PostScript Forms with Storage Device Manager
Driver Version: Win 98 4.4.1 WinNT 5.1.2(105) Software Version: 1.0.x.x
How do I make a PostScript form and use the Storage Device Manager to download and test it?
Prepare the form or overlay using a word processor - for example Microsoft Word.
When the form is ready choose Print and select the PostScript printer.
Check the box Print to file then choose Properties.
For NT4, open the branch Layout and set the Overlay value to Create Overlay. This will change the PostScript Options - PostScript Output Option to Encapsulated PostScript(EPS). In Win98 EPS is set in the PostScript properties tab.
Continue with printing. You will be prompted for a file name. Let us say it is output.prn. (It should be a .prn file)
Launch Storage Device Manager and discover the target printer.
Choose File-New Project then File-Add File to Project to find .prn files it is necessary to choose the correct filter from the combo box. Find the file you created in Step 5 (output.prn). SDM will produce a message box indicating that the .prn file has been read and a "Filter File" created on the same path but with a file type .hst. (output.hst) This is the file that will be downloaded, as displayed in the Project window of SDM.
Since output.hst is not a meaningful name, rename the form to something more sensible by double-clicking on the name in the Project window. This will produce a dialog where the name may be changed. (Do not change the target volume or path.)
Using SDM, download the file to the printer using File-Send Project Files to Printer.
- Test the form with SDM, using Printers-Test
Form. If your form does not appear in the list check the
steps above. Close Storage Device Manager.
For NT4, create the overlay in the driver using Start-Settings-Printers and choosing the Document Defaults for the target printer. You cannot create an overlay from within an application. Choose Use Overlay for the Layout -Overlay branch and click on Overlay Options. Choose New in the dialog and create the overlay and group. Use the name of the form you downloaded with SDM as the name of the overlay. In the application uncheck Print to file and print a sample document with the overlay.
